February 24, 2010 - Austin, Texas
On February 24, 2010, TCCRI will host the Speakers’ Conference, which will
feature House Speaker Joe Straus and other House Speakers from the South and
Southwest at a policy forum to showcase our region’s strong economic success
as compared to the rest of the United States. The focus of this event will
be to discuss the principled public policies that will be necessary to keep
our states’ fiscal and employment picture improving in the coming years.
The TCCRI Speakers’ Conference will open with a keynote luncheon featuring Comptroller Susan Combs, who will provide an overview of Texas’ fiscal and economic situation, with a focus on the challenges Texas will face in 2011 and beyond.
Following the Keynote Luncheon and Speakers’ Leadership Forum, the TCCRI Speakers’ Conference will feature separate panel discussions on the following issues:
- State Budget
- Transportation
- Insurance
- Energy & Environment
- Health & Human Services
- School Finance & Property Taxes
- Economic & Workforce Development
- Government Reform
Prior to the start of the 82nd Legislature in 2011, TCCRI will issue a wide range of recommendations on each of these topics. The Speakers' Conference will play a vital role in guiding the research and recommendations of the TCCRI Task Forces.
Please join us as we make the case for the enduring strength of fiscal responsibility and free markets so Texas can continue to lead the nation in growth and prosperity. As the world-renowned Economist magazine put it:
"Get it right, and Texas will remain business-friendly and globally competitive, with high employment and a rising standard of living. Get it wrong, and Texas could follow California down the road of high taxes and excessive regulation."
